Questioning of officers sought

By Bartholomew Sullivan
Lawyers for murder suspect Jessie Lloyd Misskelley Jr. have filed a legal brief in an effort to pursuade a Circuit Court judge to let them question under oath the police officers who interrogated their client.
Misskelley's alleged statement to police, which attorney Daniel T. Stidham of Paragould is trying to suppress, described the murders of three West Memphis 8-year-olds and placed co-defendants Damien Wayne Echols, 18, and Charles Jason Baldwin, 16, at the scene. All three have been charged with capital murder in the May 5 deaths.
"Prior to his arrest, (Misskelley, now 18) gave two separate statements to the investigating officers regarding the alleged homicides," Stidham wrote. ''(The) interrogation lasted some 10 to 12 hours, but very little of said interrogation was actually tape-recorded."
Circuit Judge David Burnett is expected to rule Nov. 16.
