HARDY, Ark. - John Mark Byers, the stepfather of one of three West Memphis boys slain in May 1993, has appealed his Jan. 13 conviction for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Municipal Judge Kevin King sentenced Byers, 37, to one year in jail but suspended nine months of the term on Jan. 13. Byers posted an appeal bond Wednesday.
Byers was accused by Hardy police of standing by while two juveniles had a fist fight.
Byers and his wife, Melissa, are scheduled to stand trial March 27 on felony residential burglary charges.
Byers, a self-employed jeweler, had worked as an undercover police informant before his son's death.
The couple's son, Christopher Byers, was one of three 8-year-olds found slain in a shallow ditch in May 1993. Three local teenagers were convicted of murder in trials in Corning and Jonesboro last year.
Byers was cited for carrying a loaded weapon in Fulton County, Ark., in October but paid a $161 fine earlier this month, officials said.
